If you're on a low income, you might be able to get help with some of the costs of sending your child to school.
Free school meals
Your child will automatically get free school meals if they're in reception class or year 1 or 2.
If they’re in year 3 or above, you can apply for free school meals if you receive Universal Credit.
Currently if you are in receipt of Universal Credit your annual income needs to be below £7,400 a year net. However, from the start of academic year 2026 to 2027, your child will qualify for free school meals if you get Universal Credit, regardless of household income.
